  1.                            EXPOSITION.

  3.         Prayers are the believer's weapons of war. When the
  4. battle is too hard for us, we call in our great ally, who, as it
  5. were, lies in ambush until faith gives the signal by crying out,
  6. "Arise, O Lord." Although our cause be all but lost, it shall be
  7. soon won again if the Almighty doth but bestir himself. He will
  8. not suffer men to prevail over God, but with swift judgments will
  9. confound their gloryings. In the very sight of God the wicked
  10. will be punished, and he who is now all tenderness will have no
  11. bowels of compassion for them, since they had no tears of
  12. repentance while their day of grace endured.

  14.               EXPLANATORY NOTES AND QUAINT SAYINGS.

  16.         Verse 19.--"_Arise, O Lord_," etc. What does this mean?
  17. Are we to consider the Psalmist as praying for the destruction of
  18. his enemies, as pronouncing a malediction, a curse upon them? No;
  19. these are not the words of one who is wishing that mischief may
  20. happen to his enemies; they are the words of a prophet, of one
  21. who is foretelling, in Scripture language, the evil that must
  22. befall them on account of their sins.--^Augustine.
